The Land of Thousand Islands
This trip began one lovely summer morning and nothing foretold of the troubles ahead.
We didn’t know then what a huge and dull mistake we had made: we did not bother to put locks on our travel bags or at least to wrap them. We were naïve and had not protected our luggage.
We had two suitcases with us; one of them was really huge as we had packed up a lot of our favorite things (including clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry, make up, and different devices like video cameras etc.), planning to enjoy fabulous video and photo sessions during the journey to the Land of Our Dreams. This second suitcase also contained a very beautiful wedding dress because the blessing ceremony was planned for 07-07-07 in a 5star hotel in the Maldives.
The flight went through the UAE and there we changed planes from a European airline company to Emirates Airlines for the Dubai-Male flight.
We had a couple of hours between flights and it was here we were told that our bags had not been found!!! while they were moving passengers’ luggage from one aircraft to another.
However, they said they were going to find our lost things and would deliver them to the Maldives with a small delay.
The flight was comfortable, the stewardesses were polite and the food was fine. Still, many hours in the air felt like quite a long wait. Things got more interesting when the plane started to descend down and marvelous views began to appear in our windows for all the passengers to see.
The aircraft was flying over the Great Caucasus Mountain Range and everyone decided to take pictures of this interesting wonder of nature.
The Great Caucasus Mountain Range
We were only about half-way to the Maldives, and the plane went up high over the clouds once again for several more hours.
Getting closer to our destination, when we began to descend, we could see the Indian Ocean and numerous large and small islands spread here and there.
The colors and views of this real paradise on Earth were unbelievable… you know, how can they be real?! And, even harder to believe is how the vast majority of our planet’s inhabitants are spending their lives without ever having the opportunity to see all of the absolute beauty of nature that can be discovered in this part of the world.
At Male airport our bags had not been found nor delivered, but the airport managers were still promising to find them soon and to give us a call.
The only good news was that at least we had some hand luggage containing a few spare clothes and toothbrushes.
The hotel guide met our group of tourists and drove us to the boat which took us to the island where we had booked our luxury cabins.
On our way to the hotel the pleasure of looking at boundless turquoise water surfaces was diluted by seeing a scary and very large military boat floating by with marine solders on board, and carrying real arms and guns. Our jaws fell, and we watched as if we were hypnotized while the marines watched us too, with serious expressions on their sunburned faces.
Finally, we were delivered to our sandy island.
It was inconvenient to walk in sand wearing high heel shoes, but all the flip-flops were in one of the lost bags.
Read on and in the next chapters find out what happened when we tried to shop, and how the story with the luggage ended.
In this travel guide you will discover some very useful and interesting information: the result of our investigations while visiting one of the must-go to places in the world – the Maldives Republic.
Being more aware will enable you to have only astonishing impressions, avoiding any of the disappointing experiences like some of those we went through!
